Sacred Heart Academy Philosophy

The mission of our middle schools is to nurture the development of responsible, thoughtful citizens for life in an increasingly interdependent society by creating environments in which students are challenged to explore, to create, to make decisions and to actively participate in and be accountable for their learning. We provide an environment that allows transition for the students as they move from elementary into high school years. Middle school education builds upon skills acquired in previous learning experiences and provides an opportunity to explore new areas of interest that will give direction for future choices. These students are emerging adolescents who are experiencing profound changes in the intellectual, physical, social and emotional areas of their lives. These changes call for unique learning environments where students can mature, achieve success and be challenged at their own developmental rate. We also respect the dignity of the individual person and sensitive to the needs of a diverse society, we strive to enhance and strengthen the faith and spiritual values of the students. We also seek to inspire students and encourage them to live according to the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Our overall goal is to accomplish these concepts .

Academy Science Course Descriptions

All Academy Science classes are involved in STEM (STEM is a curriculum based on the idea of educating students in four specific disciplines — science, technology, engineering and mathematics — in an interdisciplinary and applied approach.) and STEAM (STEAM is adding Art + Design to the equation — to transform STEM into STEAM.) activities. Activities from these two concepts are utilized as often as possible and when resources for the activities are available.

The 6th Grade Earth Science course is designed to teach students about the Earth, its structure and chemical and physical actions that occur on and within the Earth. The course expands beyond the Earth to include astronomy, environment and factors that affect activity on the Earth and its environment.

My classroom procedures include providing information via powerpoints, group work and student presentations. Students are also involved in completion of worksheets or activities that require high order thinking skills to be utilized. I utilize demonstrations and hands-on labs. When appropriate and financially feasible we work on projects in groups and individually. Students may be asked to contribute items throughout the year for various activities and/or labs. However, the items will not be expensive and a timely notification will be given prior to the activity. Technology is also incorporated into lessons.

The 7th Grade Life Science course is designed to teach students about all life forms, the processes that take place within the organism and factors that affect the functioning of the various types of life. Interaction of life forms is also discussed and how one life form affects another. We learn about microscopic and macroscopic life and the processes of each. A major focus will be placed on the systems of the human body.

8th Grade Science course is an Introduction to Physical Science and consists of a semester focused on an introduction to chemistry and its basic components. The second semester focuses on an introduction to physics and the basic mechanical and electrical processes such as energy, motion, forces and simple machines.
